Director ID required by 30 November 2022

Just a reminder that if you were a director of a company on 31 October 2021, you need to obtain a Director ID by no later than 30 November 2022.

You can apply online or over the phone. https://www.abrs.gov.au/director-identification-number/apply-director-identification-number

To apply online, you need a myGovID. If you don’t have a myGovID or are having difficulty applying online, our experience has been that applying over the telephone works very well provided you have access to the required in formation. The steps are as follows:

  • Gather together the required information:
    • Tax File Number
    • Passport or birth certificate. (If your passport has expired, it is still acceptable up to 3 years after the expiry date)
    • Drivers licence or Medicare card
  • Telephone 13 62 50
  • The operator will ask you for your Tax File Number and residential address
  • They will ask 1 or 2 security questions. These are generally questions that will be easy to answer and wont require access to files or documentation eg the name of the bank that pays you interest, the suburb you hold or have held a rental property
  • The operator will ask you to provide details of your primary identification document – passport or birth certificate
  • Once your primary identification document has been verified, the operator will ask you to provide details of your secondary identification document – drivers licence or Medicare card
  • Provided the secondary document is verified, then your Director ID will be issued. As part of the process of getting to the point where your ID number is provided by the operator, there will be various other questions the operator will ask you and verbal declarations the operator will ask you to make but these are all very procedural and easy to deal with.
